Concentration of European Patent Attorneys per Capita
If European Patent attorneys were equally distributed across countries, each state would exhibit a similar number of patent attorneys per capita. This is not the case, substantial differences can be shown. San Marino (774 patent attorneys per million inhabitants) and Liechtenstein are leading the score by far. These values are so high that both countries are left out in the diagram and only listed in the table below. It’s not the absolute number of patent attorneys which is responsible for these exorbitant values, but the size of the inhabitants while having some few patent law firms. Also the next two countries – Monaco and Iceland – can be categorized as such, but their numbers (79 and 70 patent attorneys per million inhabitants) are not really outliers compared to the first bigger nations in the ranking.
Those are Switzerland (60 attorneys/million) and Germany (45 attorneys/million), which are also among the countries with the most absolute number of European Patent Attorneys. Furthermore, Denmark, Sweden and the United Kingdom can be found in the Top 10, characterized by values between 32 and 40 patent attorneys per million inhabitants.
Notable are the rather low figures in several large countries: France (15 attorneys/million, rank 18), Italy (8 attorneys/million, rank 30) and Spain (4 attorneys/million, rank 34). Whether this is due to a low innovative strength, an acceptance of innovative products below average in the market, or other causes cannot be answered by the data.
However, economic strength of a nation is certainly a factor among others. Therefore, considering the current economic situation it is not surprising that Greece is second to last in this list.
On average, 17.5 patent attorneys per million inhabitants can be found in the contracting states of the European Patent Organization. The following table illustrates the figures.
On the next page, patent attorneys working in patent law firms and industrial corporations are being separated.
